HERE is a folk-classical musical, inspired by German DADA artist KURT SCHWITTERS, who invented his own collage-based art form, MERZ. When he was declared ‘degenerate’ by the Nazis, he found refuge in the UK. In London, he met Edith Thomas, who took him to Ambleside in Cumbria, where she had holidayed as a child.
Schwitters loved the place so much, that he stayed there until his death. HERE is set on Cylinders Farm in Elterwater, Cumbria, where he began what would be his final art piece - an installation collage within a small, damp barn on the farm's grounds, MERZBARN. A piece which remains unfinished.
Our re-telling of his final years on the farm take the form of a narrative, musical and text collage. We introduce characters inspired by those who lived alongside Schwitters in Cumbria.
